Likely Apocalypses: Environmental Disaster

When we created a list of likely apocalypses, Environmental Disaster was one of the top suggestions and fears. Let’s do a deeper dive into the end of the world at the hands of an environmental disaster.

What is the Most Likely Apocalyptic Environmental Disaster?

You’re probably aware of some major environmental disasters that have affected thousands or millions of lives around the world. Some of the most common include Chernobyl, Bhopal, Kuwaiti Oil Fires, Love Canal, The Exxon Valdez, The Aral Sea, and Tokaimura Nuclear Plant among others. All these disasters are in the past. The next major disaster that shocks the world to its roots is not far away.
A major earthquake that destroys the United States is increasingly likely. Continue reading “Likely Apocalypses: Environmental Disaster”

Book Review: The Last Night, by Nico Rosso

[1. Review copy provided by Carina Press]
After a chain of earthquakes ravaged the globe, long-dormant viruses were released into the air, turning many humans into creatures with an appetite for human ashes. Erica and a group of survivors are barricaded in a half-destroyed hotel, and every day brings them closer to being devoured by the seemingly unstoppable ashers. Even though Erica is a fighter, she’s tired of just surviving…
When a mysterious stranger rides into town, everything changes. Jake knows how to kill the ashers, and he’s the only man brave enough to leave the safety of the hotel in search of a better life. Erica and Jake make a deadly fighting team, with even hotter sparks flying between them. But Jake has survived this long because he rides alone. He doesn’t trust easily, especially in this harsh new reality. Can Erica convince Jake that living is more than just surviving to the next day?
I’ve tried to write post-apocalyptic erotic romance before. Despite the fact this is the second in the genre I’ve reviewed, there’s a huge gap there. I’d personally like to read more of it, and because I believe in writing what I’d like to read, I made the attempt.
I wasn’t very good at it. It turns out, I am not good at writing desire and sex. I am extraordinarily good at writing people having awkward romantic feelings for each other that sort-of maybe get kinda fulfilled towards the end, but I cannot write erotica. Because of that, I am always pleased to read the good stuff.

In Case of Apocalypse, Your Government is in Control

I’ve noticed in my hunt for preparation and survival tips that the government, at all levels, has resources available to aid in self-preparation. Sure, it’s up to you what you do with this information; but, boy is it there and in abundance.
Some cities, South Lake Tahoe in California for instance, have volumes of emergency protocols and plans online. Unfortunately, they’re kind of outdated… On the other hand, some advice is priceless.
These plans cover and define everything from winter storms to terrorism. They’re fascinating, if you have a morbid fascination with disasters and disaster preparation, like I do.
If your state, county or town doesn’t have the plan in place to prepare you for safety in the face of disaster there is no need to fret. Disaster is an equal opportunity antagonist. You can look at the prep plans of a state that might face similar perils as your area but with fewer budget constraints and better online presence.
My home state, Massachusetts, has extensive emergency preparation plans you can use as templates, brainstorming kindle or straight up as they are.
