Fangirlin' for Jericho

So, remember back in the 90s when Scream was some seriously groundbreaking shit? That was when Skeet Ulrich was famous. It was one of the things that had me puzzled when I started watching Jericho . I knew I’d heard the name but just couldn’t place it. But, once it was placed it was unforgettable. Everything about him just screams, “I love the 90s!” But maybe that’s just what bad boys in the Midwest look like… maybe.

However, Jericho isn’t about Skeet Ulrich’s heroic reascent to become a famous person — because, I’m fairly sure this show didn’t actually make him famous again. According to wikipedia, Jericho is about:

Jericho is an American action/drama series that centers on the residents of the fictional town of Jericho, Kansas, in the aftermath of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the contiguous United States.

It sounds boring. I actually didn’t watch the should for a while because it sounded boring. How on earth could flinging the already rural Midwest back into pre-civilization life be any more interesting than the Midwest currently is. Oh, they’ll have to mill corn by hand and sew dresses from curtains — don’t they already?

Eventually, with nothing else to occupy me in my Netflix streaming queue, I check out this Jericho business.

Um, apparently, regardless of the location, possibly furthered by the remoteness and forgetability of the location, well written humans with relateable thoughts, motivations, and problems are compelling.

I ran through 2 seasons of Jericho in what felt like minutes, then immediately went and got the comics that follow up the series.

Some reasons you should (and I do) love Jericho

1. There are deep secrets. Almost everyone on the cast has connections and a past they’d rather not discuss.

2. The people are really regular. The women are strong in a way that women should be. They fight for their families and their rights and take strong moral stances; they infiltrate and support in a way that only women can. The characters have flaws that are believable and convincing.

3. The world goes to shit and everyone just gets up and works. There are too many shows, movies, books, etc. where the world goes to shit and everyone panics or runs or goes super comando. In Jericho people are more realistic and reasonable. They ration food, hide from acid rain, farm, and do all the things people who are normal humans would do. they don’t go running all over the country or searching for the president.

4. It’s educational in a totally okay subversive way. You know the saying, “Those who cannot remember the past arecondemned to repeat it.”? It’s pretty much the underlying theme of the show.

5. No one is really the good guy or the gad guy. You’ll have to watch to understand this one.

UPDATE (ways to get Jericho)

  1. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

The outcome of collapse sounds a lot like the book One Second After by William R. Forstchen. You’d enjoy it as I bet it gets to go into even more detail on the organized deconstruction of a civilization than a show on CBS can get away with.

  2. I really loved Jericho. My husband and I watched both seasons on Netflix in a few days. I didn’t realize there was a comic book version of season three! Thanks for making me happy! 🙂

    1. I’m glad to help! if you’re not sure about buying the full graphic novel, I’d say start with the redux because it’s fairly cheap for the first 3 issues.
